Do I Need My Own Jump Rope?
In short, no. Gambit provides a variety of jump ropes for loan during workouts. We currently stock the Rogue SR-1 in assorted lengths.
In general, you’ll want a rope that is roughly 3 feet longer than your height.
While we’re happy to offer loaners, we do recommend investing in your own rope at some point. It’s a bit like a pair of running shoes - you can certainly borrow a pair to get you by, but you’ll ultimately be far more comfortable pushing your limits in your own pair. We don’t recommend breaking the bank on a rope. Although many companies are happy to sell you ropes costing upwards of $50, the best bang for buck tends to be in the sub-$40 range. The Rogue SR-1 is a great example of this.
Do I Need Special Shoes?
Again, the short answer is no. You can do CrossFit in just about any shoe. However, your experience may be vastly improved by following a few guidelines. Many traditional fitness shoes are overly cushioned and narrow. Both of these factors will lead to poor performance in the gym. Look for a shoe with little to no “drop” (the difference in heel height vs toe height), a toe box with some room to wiggle your toes around, and a shoe that has minimal “squish”.
During heavy weight lifting, “squish” in your shoe can ruin your stability. Likewise, a narrow toe box presses your toes together and decreases your natural stability. Nike, Reebok, and NOBULL all make a dedicated CrossFit shoe that works for multiple styles of workouts. Many other shoes and brands will be a great fit, depending on your feet, and how you prefer shoes to fit.
